Ossimoro - Oxymoron

2016

Can the essence of architecture be expressed in two words? The answer appears to provided by oxymora. The rhetorical Greek figure is both the key to interpret the project and the goal to be reached thanks to the project. More than an absolute goa…

A rigidity theorem for the pair ${\cal q}{\Bbb C} P^n$ (complex hyperquadric, complex projective space)

1999

Given a compact Kahler manifold M of real dimension 2n, let P be either a compact complex hypersurface of M or a compact totally real submanifold of dimension n. Let \(\cal q\) (resp. \({\Bbb R} P^n\)) be the complex hyperquadric (resp. the totally geodesic real projective space) in the complex projective space \({\Bbb C} P^n\) of constant holomorphic sectional curvature 4\( \lambda \). We prove that if the Ricci and some (n-1)-Ricci curvatures of M (and, when P is complex, the mean absolute curvature of P) are bounded from below by some special constants and volume (P) / volume (M) \(\leq \) volume (\(\cal q\))/ volume \(({\Bbb C} P^n)\) (resp. \(\leq \) volume \(({\Bbb R} P^n)\) / volume …

Semaglutide reduces fat accumulation in the tongue: A randomized single-blind, pilot study

2021

Abstract Aim We evaluated the effect of the latest GLP-1 RA semaglutide on tongue fat storage in obese women. Design. We conducted a randomized single-blind, pilot study. Methods Twenty-five obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (33.7 ± 5.3 years, body mass index (BMI) 36.1 ± 3.9 kg/m2, mean ± SD) were randomized to semaglutide 1.0 mg or placebo for 16 weeks. We quantified tongue volume and its fat tissue and fat proportion by magnetic resonance imaging. Results Tongue fat tissue and fat proportion significantly reduced after semaglutide vs placebo (-1.94 ± 5.51 vs. + 3.12 ± 4.87 cm3, p = 0.022, and −0.02 ± 0.07 vs. 0.04 ± 0.06, p = 0.010, respectively). Governance of Projects: Generating value by linking projects with their permanent organisation

2019

Abstract There exists little research into how value is effectively generated by temporary projects from the wider perspective of a permanent organisation. This paper investigates empirically how ‘Governance of Projects’ – the way in which a single, permanent organisation identifies, creates, and subsequently harvests value through multiple projects – occurs in four private-sector case companies. Data were collected from in-depth interviews with a wide range of employees and from internal operational documents. These data were codified and analysed as evidence of the types and intensity of links between organisational elements. The results illuminate the complex interplay of links that are …

Study of scintillation light collection, production and propagation in a 4 tonne dual-phase LArTPC

2020

The $3 \times 1 \times 1$ m$^3$ demonstrator is a dual phase liquid argon time projection chamber that has recorded cosmic rays events in 2017 at CERN. The light signal in these detectors is crucial to provide precise timing capabilities. The performances of the photon detection system, composed of five PMTs, are discussed. The collected scintillation and electroluminescence light created by passing particles has been studied in various detector conditions. In particular, the scintillation light production and propagation processes have been analyzed and compared to simulations, improving the understanding of some liquid argon properties.

Permanent left atrial pacing therapy may improve symptoms in heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction and atrial dyssynchrony: a pilot…

2012

Aims Our group has recently shown that in some patients, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF) may be explained by ‘atrial dyssynchrony syndrome’ (ADS) due to interatrial conduction delay (IACD), a short left atrioventricular interval (LAVI), and increased left atrial (LA) stiffness. Our primary objective was to evaluate LA pacing therapy as a new treatment to restore left ventricular active filling in patients with no other known causes for HF than ADS. Methods and results Six patients with severe HFPEF with IACD (P wave duration >120 ms in lead II), short LAVI during electrophysiological studies ( 15), and no standard indication for a pacemaker were implanted with a lead …

The Perception of Causality in Light of Process Ontology

2015

Human perception has an important emotional dimension. Besides having a “presentational” element that dominates the high cognitive activities of human beings, there are certain “densities of feelings,” which are inextricably intertwined with the presentational contents of our perceptual states. This does not mean that human perception is just instinctive, irrational, or intrinsically subjective. The Whiteheadian scheme allows us to determine the nature of the “emotional background” of perception without falling into the traps of subjectivism, representationalism, or substantialism. The feeling which I call “the sense of physicality” is just one of the elements of this emotional dimension in…

Ahmed valve, suture-less implantation: A new approach to an easier technique.

2013

Purpose Tissue adhesives have been used in ophthalmology instead of sutures to minimize the operating time. This case series investigated the effectiveness and safety of use of cyanoacrylate in Ahmed valve implantation through pars plana for refractory glaucoma. Patients and methods Seventeen eyes of 17 patients with refractory glaucoma underwent Ahmed valve scleral suture-less implantation through pars plana with a cyanoacrylate suture of the plate. Refractory glaucoma was defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) ≥ 21 mm Hg with antiglaucoma eye drops, good adherence to treatment, and no previous glaucoma surgery. IOP control and development of complications were evaluated during the follow-u…

In Vitro Bioactivity of Astaxanthin and Peptides from Hydrolisates of Shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) By-Products: From the Extraction Process to B…

2021

Non-edible parts of crustaceans could be a rich source of valuable bioactive compounds such as the carotenoid astaxanthin and peptides, which have well-recognized beneficial effects. These compounds are widely used in nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals, and their market is rapidly growing, suggesting the need to find alternative sources. The aim of this work was to set up a pilot-scale protocol for the reutilization of by-products of processed shrimp, in order to address the utilization of this valuable biomass for nutraceutical and pharmaceuticals application, through the extraction of astaxanthin-enriched oil and antioxidant-rich protein hydrolysates. Astaxanthin (AST) was obtained using …

A New Self-Expanding Nitinol Stent (JoStent SelfX) for Palliation of Malignant Biliary Obstruction: a Pilot Study

2004

Background and Study Aims: The JoStent SelfX is a new biliary uncovered self-expanding nitinol stent. The main advantage of this stent in comparison with the gold standard Wallstent is the minimal shortening (< 10%) that occurs during stent deployment. A prospective feasibility study was conducted to evaluate the method of stent implantation and the stent's short-term efficacy. Patients and Methods: Between April 2001 and December 2002, the JoStent SelfX was implanted in 20 patients with inoperable malignant biliary obstructions, mainly caused by pancreatic cancer (12 of 20). All patients underwent sphincterotomy prior to stent insertion. After implantation, laboratory parameters for choles…
